Homemade Caramel sauce

Ingredients:
1 liter whole milk
300 g sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Milk:
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, pour the milk. Add the sugar and mix well.
Add the Baking Soda:
2. Dissolve the baking soda in a little milk (about 1 tablespoon) and add it to the pot. The baking soda helps prevent the mixture from curdling and gives the dulce de leche its characteristic color.
Add the Vanilla (Optional):
3. If using a vanilla bean, cut it lengthwise and scrape the seeds. Add both the seeds and the bean to the milk. If using vanilla extract, add it directly.
